Hundreds of volunteers dive in to clean Murcia's seabed
More than 500 people joined the Murcia marine clean-up stretching from San Pedro to Águilas
More than 500 volunteers took part in a huge clean-up operation along the Murcia coastline on Saturday June 6, helping remove rubbish from beaches and the seabed in one of the Region's biggest annual environmental events.
The fifth edition of the Region of Murcia's large-scale marine clean-up brought together divers, environmental groups, local organisations and members of the public at locations stretching from San Pedro del Pinatar to Águilas, including El Portús in Cartagena.
According to the regional government, the initiative has removed more than 8,000kg of waste from the seabed since it was launched in 2021. Thousands of volunteers and dozens of diving and environmental organisations have taken part over the years, helping to tackle pollution in some of the Mediterranean's most important marine areas.
Juan Pedro Vera, Director General of Agricultural, Livestock and Fisheries Production, highlighted the role local communities play in protecting the environment.
"The best way to conserve the marine environment is to involve citizens in its care and raise awareness about the impact that waste has when it reaches the sea," he said.
He also pointed out that Murcia is home to some of the Mediterranean's most valuable marine ecosystems and stressed the importance of continuing education and conservation projects that help restore and protect the seabed.One of the key locations taking part this year was El Portús beach in Cartagena, where the event was organised by the GESC Club, a non-profit volunteer group focused on coastal conservation and environmental education.
Dozens of volunteers and divers joined the Cartagena operation, supported by local organisations and institutions including the Polytechnic University of Cartagena (UPCT). University volunteers helped with collecting, sorting and cataloguing waste as well as providing logistical support throughout the day.
During the clean-up, organisers presented information about this year's campaign and highlighted the importance of volunteering as a way of encouraging environmental responsibility and public involvement.
