Until September 6 Paisaje del Tiempo historical photography exhibition in Cartagena

3,000 years of history in Cartagena seen through images of the city’s architecture

An architectural photography exhibition entitled “Paisaje del Tiempo” (The Landscape of Time) is now open at the Roman Theatre Museum in Cartagena, showing images of the city’s architecture which reflect and illustrate the 3,000 years of history behind the urban landscape we see today.

Through architectural elements it is possible to trace the development of Cartagena, as well as gain an idea of the values, needs and aspirations of each period represented, and although the exhibition consists of just 13 high-resolution image panels and a video which welcomes visitors, it is an interesting piece of background insight whether you are joining one of the many tours and activities in the Roman arena or not.

Among the features seen in the images are the defensive wall built by Carlos III in the 18^th century, the 2,400-year-old Punic Wall, some of the larger constructions created by the Romans between 209 BC and the fifth century AD, the Modernist buildings in the city centre and the traditional viewpoints, each selected to illustrate how Cartagena has forged its own identity over the centuries and millennia.

Never far out of shot, of course, is the sea, perhaps the single most important factor in the historical importance of Cartagena; the natural harbour has for many years determined the urban development of the settlement and favoured the introduction of different architectural ideas.

Accompanying the images are information panels with QR codes enabling visitors to see and hear audiovisual content explaining what they are seeing, and a narrated version is available for children. Subtitles are available for the hard of hearing and there are also special descriptions for the visually impaired.
