ARCHIVED - 20 endangered marbled teal ducks released in Mazarron
One of the most endangered species in Europe, these ducks will make a new home in the Las Moreras lagoons, Mazarrón
The Special Bird Protection Zone (ZEPA) of the Las Moreras lagoons in the Murcia municipality of Mazarrón has released the area’s newest residents this week, 20 marbled teal ducks. Under the LIFE project, these endangered birds have been reared in captivity with the hope that now, in the wild, they will repopulate the native species.
"These are species from the captive breeding program carried out at the La Granja Fauna Recovery Center in El Saler in Valencia and the Fauna Recovery Center in Santa Faz in Alicante," explained the head of Environment, Mar Menor, Universities and Research, Juan María Vázquez.
The Mazarrón lagoon is ideally located between Andalucía and Alicante and the wetlands are perfect for introducing new and threatened species since duck hunting is banned in the Region of Murcia. The natural habitat has recently been improved with the removal of 95 tonnes of rubble to make way for 550 m2 of new vegetation, including a vast array of native plants.
In addition, the border fence has been repaired to deter visitors from disturbing the nesting wildlife, while 1,500 square metres of reeds have been scrubbed from the nearby stretch of shore and replaced with the habitat preferred by this wild duck.
Before their ultimate release into the Las Moreras wetlands, the birds were kept in large cages for a week, to get used to their new surroundings. The breeding pairs were closely watched by environmental agents from Mazarrón and members ANSE.
The installation of discreet cameras above two nesting boxes will also allow the experts to monitor the birds and hopefully capture breeding behaviour later this spring.
The marbled teal is the most endangered duck species in Europe, and in Spain; with just 100 pairs, it was declared critically endangered in 2018.
