Woman accused of drowning dog at Alicante beach

Animal rights campaigners demand stiffer punishments for abuse of animals

A dog has died after a French woman allegedly tried to drown it in the sea at Aguamarga beach in Alicante, according to animal rights political party PACMA.

Witnesses claimed that several people in the area berated the woman when they saw what she was doing.

The suspect allegedly repeatedly submerged the dog so that it could not breathe, then eventually dragged it motionless out of the water by its lead.

The dog had swallowed a great deal of water and was rushed to a veterinary clinic, but its lungs were so full of fluid that it died.

The local police have opened a case of alleged animal abuse, and official accusations have also been lodged by one of the witnesses, PACMA and animal protection association Asoka El Grande.

PACMA has condemned this “act of cruelty” and called for justice that is appropriate for the seriousness of this case.

The party’s national president, Javier Luna claimed this incident is yet another example of why the Penal Code should establish harsher punishments, including prison, for animal abuse.

“The current legislation is not dissuasive nor does it provide real protection for animals against atrocities like this,” he said.
