Flight from London to Ibiza descends into mid-air brawl

Police met a Ryanair plane at Ibiza Airport after a passenger allegedly ignored the seatbelt sign and fought with fellow travellers

A Ryanair flight from London Stansted to Ibiza was delayed after a fight broke out between passengers as the aircraft prepared to land on October 5.

According to passenger Harry Watson, 28, the trouble began when a man stood up to use the toilet despite the seatbelt sign being illuminated. Other travellers began shouting at him as he returned to his seat.

Watson said one passenger was “very verbal” towards the man, who then reacted angrily.

“The lad didn’t like it, so he got angry and violent towards the guy, which caused a fight to break out,” Watson said. “This happened multiple times.”

He claimed the man then attacked other passengers and had to be restrained several times. Another passenger was also said to have punched him during the disturbance.

Footage from inside the cabin shows a flight attendant trying to calm the situation and telling the passenger to “sit down”. Ryanair said its crew called ahead for police assistance after a passenger became disruptive.

The fight meant the pilots were unable to prepare for descent, delaying the landing. Watson said passengers became increasingly frustrated because the aircraft could not land and had to go back into the air.

“Everyone got very annoyed after a while, especially because the plane couldn’t land and had to go back in the air again,” he said.

When the flight finally landed at Ibiza Airport, Spanish police arrested and handcuffed one man before escorting him from the aircraft.

A Ryanair spokesperson said: “Crew on this flight from London Stansted to Ibiza (5 Oct) called ahead for police assistance after a passenger became disruptive onboard.”

The airline said police met the aircraft on landing and removed the disruptive passenger. It added that it has a “strict zero tolerance policy” towards passenger misconduct and will continue to take “decisive action” against unruly behaviour.
