Murcia’s weekly weather forecast has been updated to reflect worsening conditions

Yellow warning for strong wind and waves in Murcia this Wednesday

The State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) has issued a yellow warning for strong wind and high waves this Wednesday October 9 along the coastline of Mazarrón, Cartagena and La Manga del Mar Menor.

For this day, a southwesterly wind of 50 to 60km/h (gale force 7) and waves of 2-3 metres high are forecast by the Spanish met office as the straggly end of the USA’s Hurricane Kirk makes itself felt in Spain.

Officially, the yellow warning for Murcia’s coastline begins this Wednesday at 2pm and ends at 10pm.

While the other areas of southern Murcia such as Águilas are not under weather alert for now, the neighbouring province of Almería is.

As one of the affected municipalities, Cartagena City Council has released some advice for how to behave when faced with such weather warnings, reminding people of the need to “stay away from jetties, beaches and other places near the coastline which may be affected by the breaking waves and the intensity of the wind”, as well as to avoid going out to sea and to keep an eye on boat moorings.

“Neither should vehicles be parked in areas which may be affected by the waves,” they said in a statement.

They concluded, “It is also advised to remove from the facades of buildings those elements that may be blown away by the wind such as flower pots, awnings or blinds and to avoid passing near walls that may collapse or under wooded areas from which branches may fall. It is also advisable to limit speed and increase caution while driving.”
