These are the fines in Spain for driving with an icy or snowy windshield

The traffic authorities in Spain will hand out costly fines if your visibility is obstructed

Every winter, despite what you might think, Spain experiences swirling snow storms and icy weather, even in the normally warm and sunny south. During these cold, blizzard-like conditions, the traffic authorities advise against driving unless it’s absolutely necessary.

However, for most people, life has to go on even in sub-zero temperatures and work, dropping the kids to school, grocery shopping and other essential activities are unavoidable.

Don’t be surprised if, in wintertime in Spain, you actually wake up to find your car covered in a dusting of snow or your windscreen caked in ice. You also shouldn’t be surprised to know that here in Spain, failing to clean your car properly will land you with an expensive fine.

Traffic fines for a dirty windscreen

Even if you’re in a hurry, it’s a good idea to take a few minutes to defrost the windscreen before getting behind the wheel, since failing to do so drastically reduces visibility. If you’re caught driving with a snowy or icy windscreen or windows, you’ll likely be fined between 80 and 200 euros.

The traffic authorities don’t stop there, however, as there are several other infractions that could cost you dearly, including:

Visible damage or cracks to the windscreen that prevent the driver seeing clearly.
Excessive dirt that hinders clear visibility.
Stickers or other elements on the glass that make it difficult for the driver to see.
A mobile phone cradle or GPS device that obstructs the view of the driver.

The fines vary according to the severity of the infraction, but it should be remembered that your car can be seized on the spot if the traffic police feel your vehicle is a danger to road safety.

Along the same lines, a dodgy wiper blade comes with a fine of 80 euros and tinted windows are only allowed if approved by an ITV centre – otherwise, it will incur a penalty of 200 euros.
