Swedish man dies in car fire after school run in Benahavís
Body found inside burning vehicle in La Alquería tunnel identified as 47-year-old Estepona resident
A Swedish man who lived in Estepona has been confirmed as the person who died in a car fire in Benahavís on Tuesday April 22.The man, who was around 47 years old, had just dropped off his eight-year-old daughter at school when the crash happened. His car hit one of the walls inside the La Alquería tunnel and quickly caught fire.
Emergency services started getting calls just before 8am from people who had seen a vehicle in flames near the Guadalmina River, under the motorway. Officers from the Benahavís Local Police were sent out straight away, along with medical teams and firefighters from Marbella.
When they arrived, the fire crew found the man’s body still inside the burnt-out car. He was later identified as a Swedish national who had been living in the nearby town of Estepona.
Police are still looking into exactly what caused the crash. One of the theories being considered is that the car may have been going too fast, but at this point nothing has been ruled out. The investigation is ongoing and being handled by local police in Benahavís.
