Ryanair bomb scare closes Ibiza airport

Air traffic at the Spanish airport was halted after a drunk passenger claimed to be carrying a bomb

Flight operations at Ibiza Airport had to be stopped for nearly an hour yesterday afternoon, Thursday June 20, due to what turned out to be a false bomb threat on a plane.

Air traffic was suspended for around 45 minutes between 3.45pm and 4.30pm and flights were diverted to other airports after a drunk passenger on a Ryanair flight bound for Bergamo Milan, Italy claimed to be carrying a bomb.

Moments before the plane was due to take off, the bomb alert was triggered and police shut down all airport operations until they could confirm whether the bomb threat was legitimate or not.

In the end it was not, and it appears that a passenger apparently under the influence of a few too many drink claimed to be carrying a bomb on the Ryanair plane.

The Guardia Civil’s explosives deactivation group, GEDEX, found that to be untrue, and arrested the passenger.

Air traffic was re-established within the hour and normality restored, though a few flights were delayed by the incident.
