ARCHIVED - Percheles beach turf war set to end as Mazarron Council takes ownership of private land
51,000m2 between the beach of Las Chapas and Parazuelos will become Mazarrón municipal property

After more than four years of conflict and altercations, Mazarrón Town Council will grant the initial approval for the expropriation of 51,000 square metres of land around Percheles beach that is currently privately owned. Through the process, the municipality will take ownership of around 3 kilometres of coastline between Las Chapas beach and Parazuelos which includes car parks and walkways.
Although most of the surroundings of Percheles are already open to the public, a few key strips of land are still owned privately and for years residents and tourists have faced problems with one resident in particular who owns a plot of land that provides direct access to the beach, and also a large area that visitors use for parking.
During previous summers, this landowner has charged people to park their cars without the appropriate permits, preventing beachgoers from passing through his land unless they pay. More recently, he has set up an unauthorised campsite for caravans and motorhomes.
Three houses that were built in the area without the proper planning permission will also be expropriated by Mazarrón Town Council.
For local authorities in Cañada Gallego, “it is news that we have been waiting for since the summer of 2017, when this man began to put obstacles to the use of the access road”.
“It seems that everything is finally well tied up so that it can move forward and be able to preserve and protect the area, which is now highly modified.”
The head of Urban Planning in Mazarrón doesn’t anticipate any problems with the approval of the expropriation process on Tuesday January 31, which will reclaim 51,345 square metres of coastal land for public use at a cost of 150,000 euros.
“After the approval, a 30-day period of allegations opens that from the Town Council we will have to resolve and, later, approve in plenary session. Once these steps have been taken, everything can be expropriated within 20 days,” the councillor explained.
