Alicante's El Palmeral Park closes mornings for palm tree maintenance
Ayuntamiento tends to 7,000 date palms from Monday January 19 to Friday January 23
El Palmeral Park in Alicante's San Gabriel neighbourhood will be closed from 9am to 3pm daily from Monday January 19 to Friday January 23 while the Ayuntamiento carries out essential pruning and maintenance work on more than 7,000 palm trees, mostly date palms. The park will reopen each afternoon until the usual closing time around 11pm, allowing visitors access later in the day.The morning closure facilitates the movement of basket trucks needed to prune the tall palms and provides space for crews to collect branches and adjust the irrigation system. These routine tasks ensure the health and safety of the trees in this important green space by the sea. Pedestrian traffic during these operations would hinder the work and pose safety risks.
The park reopened in April last year following a comprehensive 1.3 million euro refurbishment that enhanced its family-friendly appeal. The second phase of works included new children's play areas, calisthenics zones and a pump track, alongside improvements to roads, lakes, paths, signage, access points, perimeter fencing, sidewalks and services. The 'Brota Alicante' project also incorporated additional palm trees, plants and shrubs throughout the park.
The Ayuntamiento has scheduled these works to maintain the park's condition and ensure it remains a safe, attractive space for residents and visitors. The maintenance reflects ongoing commitment to preserving Alicante's green spaces, particularly those featuring the date palms that characterise the region's landscape.
Once completed, the park will be ready to welcome its regular visitors for walks, exercise and family outings. The temporary morning closure represents a necessary investment in the long-term quality of this valuable community resource.
