Until September 3 Neanderthal Man exhibition in Cartagena

The untold story of Neanderthals in the Region of Murcia at the archaeological museum of Cartagena

“Ancestros, Neandertales en la Región de Murcia” is the title of an exhibition which has opened at the Enrique Escudero de Castro archaeological museum in Cartagena for the summer of 2023, outlining some of the little which is known about the distant ancestors of Homo sapiens who inhabited southern Spain and the Region of Murcia around 50,000 years ago.

The exhibition, which opens to the public on May 10, is an attempt to clarify some of the myths which still surround the Neanderthals and help to understand how they (or we) really lived before our current species evolved, and exhibits include items found at various sites in the Region of Murcia including the Cueva de los Aviones in Cartagena. Ther are also illustrations, scale models of Neanderthal settlements and even a figurine of the torso of a Neanderthal.

Some of the evidence found reveals details about what our ancestors ate and what skills they developed, and these are illustrated by three high quality videos.

The exhibition runs from May 10 to September 3and can be visited from Tuesday to Friday between 10.00 and 14.00 and from 17.00 to 20.00, and at weekends from 11.00 to 14.00. The museum does not open on Mondays or public holidays.
