With the help of the Murcia Historical Heritage Service, police have charged the owners of the land where the windmill was located with a crime against historical heritage

Two arrested after protected Torre Pacheco windmill knocked down

The Guardia Civil are investigating a serious crime committed in the Mar Menor area of the Region of Murcia after a protected windmill in Torre Pacheco was smashed to the ground.

The monument had protected status as an Asset of Cultural Interest (Bien de Interés Cultural or BIC) since 2009 for its historical and cultural significance.

There are many windmills throughout the Campo de Cartagena area dating, many back to the 18th and even 16th centuries. Those in the municipality of Torre Pacheco are amongst the best preserved thanks to the restoration and preservation work carried out on them by the Town Hall.

Investigations began back in March when ordinary citizens and the Association of Windmills, whose purpose is to disseminate and protect this type of cultural heritage, alerted police that the windmill had been knocked down entirely.

Within the framework of the ‘Plan for the Defence of Spanish Historical Heritage’, police have identified and charged two people who are suspected of committing or at least collaborating in ‘crimes against historical heritage’.

These are the owners of the plot of land where the protected windmill was located, who have failed “to conserve and safeguard it”.

According to article 8 of Law 4/2007, of March 16, on Cultural Heritage of the Autonomous Community of the Region of Murcia, the owners, possessors and other holders of rights in rem over assets of cultural interest have the obligation to conserve, safeguard and protect them to ensure their integrity and avoid their destruction or deterioration.
