Spain celebrates International Day of People with Disabilities on December 3
Spain will join the rest of the world to spotlight disability rights, inclusion and accessibility for all

The International Day of People with disabilities is a day to raise awareness about disability rights and to highlight the difficulties they face on a daily basis. It is held every year on December 3 in Spain and throughout Europe. Communities, governments and organisations often organise events and campaigns to promote inclusion and equal opportunities.
It’s a chance to take a good look at how we can come together to improve the way our communities support and include people with disabilities.
How will International Day of People with Disabilities be marked in Spain?
Across Spain and Europe, awareness campaigns are organised to show progress in accessibility and inclusion. Schools and community centres get involved with educational events. Organisations usually use this day as a platform to push for better laws, more funding and local support. They tend to host conferences and talks to discuss disability rights, social policies and to shine a light on the issues people with disabilities face.
In Spain, the day is coordinated by CERMI (the Spanish Committee of Representatives of Persons with Disabilities), which is a platform that brings together organisations and advocates fighting for disability rights.
Why the day matters and what needs to improve in 2025

The International Day of People with Disabilities is a reminder that inclusion is not just a box to tick; it's just the right way to live. CERMI’s message is clear: Spain and the EU must continue to be a place where inclusion and equal rights are guaranteed for everyone. Protecting disability rights benefits everyone after all.
For 2025, CERMI has created a manifesto to set out some key priorities it believes Spain and Europe need to focus on. The main goal of the manifesto is to fully implement the EU Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities and to finally approve the EU Non-Discrimination Directive, which basically gives people stronger protection against discrimination.
They are also calling for real progress on accessibility on everything from transport to housing, public spaces and much more. In the manifesto, they also mention the need for accessible voting and better consumer information, like Braille and sign language. CERMI is also proposing the creation of a European Accessibility Agency to keep these goals on track.
Among other topics, the manifesto for 2025 singles out the challenges faced by women and girls with disabilities, as well as those affected by conflict or migration.
The International Day of People with Disabilities is a day to put ourselves in the shoes of people with disabilities. To really think about how disability can impact even the smallest everyday actions and how we tend to take those things for granted.
