ARCHIVED - Snow continues in the mountains as temperatures remain frigid: Murcia weather forecast January 23-29
The cold weather and snowy conditions are set to persist for the rest of the week
Winter finally feels like it has arrived and the cold weather which swept into the Region of Murcia last week is set to continue over the course of this week. In fact, temperatures are forecast to be as much as three degrees lower than normal for this time of year, a drastic change from just a couple of weeks ago when they were higher than usual.
According to Rubén del Campo, spokesman for Spain’s State Meteorological Agency (Aemet), the cold front entered Murcia last Sunday due to the arrival of a “mass of very cold and dry polar air” from northern Europe.
The plummeting temperatures throughout the Region left the first snowfall of the winter in the highest altitude parts, specifically, in the northwest in Moratalla. It is expected that the Murcian peaks will continue to be snowed in this week.
For the rest of the Region, Aemet forecasts for this Monday January 23 that skies will be partly cloudy or clear, tending to cloud over from the afternoon onwards, and there will be some occasional rainfall in the Campo de Cartagena, more likely in the late afternoon. There is a slight chance of weak and scattered precipitation in the northwestern sierras in the evening, with snow levels around 500 metres.
Temperatures are unchanged or slightly decreasing from this weekend, with light frost in inland areas as night-time minimums remain below zero in the northern half of the Region and not much higher than 1 or 2ºC in the south and southeast. During the day, much of the northern half of the Region will see early afternoon maximum temperatures of 10-12ºC, while Cartagena, Águilas and the south should be slightly higher, around 15-16ºC.
The chance of rain will continue on Tuesday January 24, but only around San Javier and Torre Pacheco. Aside from this, the dry and sunny conditions, with frequent cloud cover and stronger than usual winds – especially on Wednesday morning – will prevail for the rest of the week.
The Murciasalud health service has activated its ‘Level 2 cold alert’ and is reminding people of the best ways to stay safe and warm in cold weather, including such advice as avoiding drastic changes of temperature, wearing lots of thin layers rather than just one thick layer, and staying up-to-date with the latest weather information before you leave the house.
They also state that when outside, we should “breathe through the nose and not through the mouth, as the air warms up when it passes through your nostrils and that way you reduce the cold that reaches your lungs.”
