Several parts of southern Spain on alert for New Year's Eve DANA
The last storm of the year has placed the Valencian Community, Andalucía, Murcia and the Balearic Islands on high alert for rain
New Year’s Eve is set to be a washout in much of southern Spain, with thundery rain threatening all of the outdoor festivities. This is thanks to the presence of a DANA to the southeast of the country and the arrival of a humid flow from the Mediterranean.
This has led to the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) issuing a yellow risk warning for heavy downpours accompanied by storms on Tuesday December 31 in the Valencian Community, Andalucía, the Region of Murcia and the Balearic Islands, where 20 litres per square metre of water could accumulate in one hour.
The Valencian Community remains under a yellow warning for rain and small hail along the northern and southern coasts of Valencia, as well as in Alicante. According to Aemet's, up to 60 litres of rain per square metre may accumulate within 12 hours.
Similar warnings are in place for Andalucía, particularly in the eastern part of Almería, and for the Balearic Islands, Campo de Cartagena and Mazarrón.
These alerts will remain in place until well into the afternoon of Wednesday January 1.
In Murcia’s Guadalentín Valley and Lorca, rainfall is expected to reach 15 litres per square metre in just one hour. Heavy rain is also forecast for Águilas, continuing throughout the night.
Over in Ibiza and Formentera, thunderstorms and small hail may occasionally accompany the rain.
Several other regions are also under yellow alerts. Aragon, Catalonia and Castilla y León are facing warnings for both fog, which is expected to clear by midday, and very low minimum temperatures.
Navarra and La Rioja are under alert for dense fog with visibility as low as 200 metres, while Castilla-La Mancha has warnings for extreme cold, with temperatures dropping to -6°C in the mountain ranges of Cuenca and Guadalajara. In the Community of Madrid, temperatures could reach -4°C in the south and the west.
In Aragon, minimum temperatures of -4°C are forecast in the Zaragoza-Iberian system, with even lower temperatures of -6°C expected in Albarracín and Jiloca-Teruel. Similar frigid conditions are predicted for Castilla y León, including -6°C in the Central System of Ávila, the Iberian system of Burgos and the Central System of Segovia and Soria.
Catalonia will also see significant drops in temperature, with minimums of -4°C in Barcelona’s central depression and -6°C in the Girona and Lleida Pyrenees, particularly affecting the Cerdanya Valley.
Tarragona may experience cold weather in areas near the southern coast.
