Rain and cold return: Spain weather forecast May 19-22
A couple of bright, sunny days will be bookended by chilly temperatures, showers and storms throughout Spain

Weather outlook on Thursday May 22
The coming week will begin with unsettled weather in the north of Spain due to a pocket of cold air high in the atmosphere but at the same time, a strong high-pressure system over the Azores will block the worst of the storms from the south of the country.
Although there is a high-pressure system keeping much of Spain calm, we will still see periods of instability, particularly at the start of the week.
On Monday May 19, the most serious rain warnings (orange level) will be lifted, but lighter yellow level warnings will remain in place for areas such as Navarra, northern Aragon and northeastern Catalonia. Rain in these regions could still be heavy at times, with thunderstorms and possibly some hail.

Weather outlook on Monday May 19
Lighter rain is also expected on Monday in parts of Galicia, the eastern coast of the Cantabrian Sea, the upper Ebro valley and eastern Castilla y León. Some of these areas could also experience occasional thunderstorms. In the rest of the country, especially in the south and east, the weather will be clearer.
After Monday, the weather will generally be calmer until Thursday May 22. On that day, a new cold front will move in, bringing more unstable conditions. Rain will return to the north of the country in the morning and will move south throughout the day. By the afternoon and evening, it will reach parts of eastern Andalucía and the Balearic Islands. As this front moves through, colder air will follow, causing temperatures to drop again in many places.

Weather outlook on Tuesday May 20
In the meantime, the Valencian Community and Catalonia are both on alert for strong gusts of wind on Tuesday May 20, although the weather should remain mostly bright and sunny in the rest of the country.
The high pressure system will continue to hold on Wednesday May 21, resulting in mostly clear skies until late in the evening, when the cloud cover will start to set in.

Weather outlook on Wednesday May 21
Temperatures will fluctuate quite a bit throughout the week. At the start of the week, some cities including Valencia, Lleida, Murcia and Sevilla, could still see highs of around 30ºC. In many areas of southern Spain, it will remain warm, while the north will be cooler, with daytime temperatures between 15 and 20ºC and early morning lows of between 5 and 10ºC.
By Friday May 23, the colder air will reach the south, leading to a noticeable drop in temperatures there too. Cities such as Sevilla, Córdoba and Murcia may see the mercury fall by 5 or 6ºC compared to earlier in the week.
