The parish church of San Pedro Apóstol in San Pedro del Pinatar
Mass times and location, Parroquia de San Pedro Apóstol
The Iglesia de San Pedro Apostól is the parish churchin the centre of San Pedro del Pinatar.
In the 17th century, there was a proliferation of chapel construction across the countryside of Murcia, mainly due to the missionary activities of the Franciscans, and one of them was built at what was then El Pinatar, dedicated to San Pedro (Saint Peter). From then on El Pinatar became known as San Pedro del Pinatar.
The church is in the shape of a Latin cross, with the main façade looking south.
After its construction it was decorated with paintings from the school of Nicolás de Villacís, possibly by Pablo Sistori, very characteristic of churches built in the area during this period. Four of the sculptures acquired during the 18th century were by Francisco Salzillo y Alcaraz, who worked in Murcia: The Apostle Saint Peter, San Antonio de Padua, San Francisco de Asis and Nuestra Señora del Rosario.
Sadly, all of these were destroyed during the Spanish Civil War of 1936-39 and the church was set on fire. Following the war, the church underwent restoration and the sculptures were replaced with newer images.
The church is the focal point for many of the major fiestas and events held in the municipality today.
