ARCHIVED - October 27 and 28 Wine tourism and traditional Spanish music meet in Jumilla
This month, Jumilla will celebrate its first ever ‘Tunas’ competition, accompanied by the local specialty wines
A very special event is coming to Jumilla at the end of this month that combines the best of wine tourism and traditional Spanish music.
Jumilla’s Councillor for Culture, Pilar Martínez, along with the President of the Central Board of Easter Brotherhoods, Antonio Ramos, accompanied by Ivan Escudero, representing the University Tuna of Valencia, have presented this event – the first edition of what is hoped will become the annual Contest of the Cuarentunas.
Named ‘Tuna y vino, suena divino’ (‘Tuna and wine, sounds divine’), the event is to be held in Jumilla on October 28 and 29.
It should be noted that in Spanish, the word ‘tuna’ doesn’t refer to a large Atlantic fish, but rather is a group of university students and alumni who play guitars or lutes and sing traditional, comic or satirical songs while dressed in medieval-style garb, complete with their distinctive sashes. You can see the tunas at many traditional fiestas in Spain.
The new activity in Jumilla to promote the confluence of these tunas and the municipality’s famous Wine Route is to be organised by the Central Board of Brotherhoods, in collaboration with Jumilla Town Council, the Wine Route of Jumilla and the Tuna Universitaria de Valencia.
The event will bring together in Jumilla about a hundred participants around Spain, specifically from the tunas of Alcoy, Cartagena, Alicante, Cadiz, Malaga and Valencia.
“The aim is to combine the best tuna songs with the authentic flavour of Jumilla wine,” explained the organisers.
