New air quality control and monitoring station to be located in Jumilla
The northern Murcia municipality has been chosen to host the new centre, which will monitor air pollution in the region
Against a backdrop of complicated air quality in the Region of Murcia, especially in larger cities like Murcia capital and Lorca and due in part to semi-frequent episodes of Saharan dust clouds, the regional government has decided to install a new air quality control and monitoring station in Jumilla.
It is part of a commitment this year to launch a new zoning map of the regional network for the control and monitoring of air quality, which is the main tool for systematically measuring air quality on which the agencies rely to take measures based on the state of the atmosphere.
Before the end of 2024, the new station will be up and running in Jumilla in order to serve the Altiplano area of the north of the region. This will be the eleventh fixed station in the community’s air quality monitoring network, and there is also one mobile station that travels around too.
The Regional Minister for the Environment, Juan María Vázquez, said, “We will have invested 1.5 million euros once the renovation of the fixed air quality measurement network has been completed with modern technological equipment and new stations, including the one in Jumilla, which will come into operation this year.”
This new installation serves to further highlight Jumilla’s green credentials, after they recently drafted a climate action plan which welcomes local people’s opinions and feedback on the schemes in place to improve sustainability and environmental concerns in the municipality.
