Murcia's beaches and marinas scoop 98 quality and sustainability flags this year
The Region is now among Spain's leaders for coastal tourism certifications despite having a shorter coastline than many rivals

The Region of Murcia has picked up 50 Q Flags for Tourist Quality and 48 S Flags for Tourist Sustainability across its beaches and marinas this year, cementing its reputation as one of Spain's leading coastal destinations despite having a shorter stretch of coastline than many of its rivals.
The awards, certified by the Institute for Spanish Tourist Quality and Sustainability (ICTES), were handed out at a ceremony in Santiago de la Ribera, San Javier, the first time the Region has hosted the event.
Tourism Minister Carmen Conesa was among those attending, and she used the occasion to underline what the certifications represent.
"These awards recognise the commitment of our coastal municipalities and ports to tourism excellence, sustainability, quality of services and continuous improvement," she said, adding that "sustainability is not only an environmental obligation, it is also an opportunity to generate more competitive tourism, with greater added value and aligned with the new demands of the visitor."
The flags are spread across seven municipalities. Cartagena leads the way with 13 Q flags and 13 S flags, and will also fly 12 Blue Flags this summer after the La Azohía-El Cuartel beach was added to the list, putting the municipality fourth in all of Spain for Blue Flags behind Vigo, Sanxenxo and Águilas.
San Javier follows with 11 Q and 11 S flags, Mazarrón with 9 Q and 11 S, Águilas and Los Alcázares with 6 each of both flags, and San Pedro del Pinatar with 4 Q flags. Puerto Yacht Cartagena also received one Q and one S.
In San Javier, all certified beaches hold both the Q and S distinctions.
Mayor José Miguel Luengo paid tribute to the work put in by his team, highlighting that the municipality has been operating to ISO quality standards on its beaches since 2010.
"The San Javier Town Council will continue to make this effort, determined to continue promoting a destination that is growing in sustainability and accessibility," he said, also pointing to the adapted bathing facilities with amphibious chairs and crutches available across much of the municipal coastline.
Supporting the drive to raise standards further, the regional Tourism Ministry is running a €100,000 project with ICTES to help 35 publicly and privately managed tourist resources across the region implement quality and sustainability systems, with training, technical assistance and support for external audits all included.
