ARCHIVED - Murcia teenage tennis champ Carlos Alcaraz wins US open and becomes youngest ever No 1
The new breakaway star of tennis is bringing Murcia to the world stage
Carlos Alcaraz has become the youngest person in the history of world tennis to become world number 1 after he won the US Open at just 19 years, 4 months and 6 days old.
After winning the Madrid Open in May and reaching the quarter finals of Roland Garros in June, Murcia boy Alcaraz has won the first Grand Slam of his career – and made history doing so.
With this win, he smashes the record for youngest ever world Number 1 previously held by Lleyton Hewitt, a record that was in place for 21 years.
In just one year, Alcaraz has gone from being number 100 in the world to number 1, becoming the fourth Spaniard to do so after Rafa Nadal, Juan Carlos Ferrero and Carlos Moya.
About two thousand people were following the final of the US Open live from a giant screen set up in Alcaraz’s home town of El Palmar, where a giant mural of him was inaugurated this summer in recognition of his success. A thousand people were seated in the chairs provided by Ayuntamiento, but there were just as many happy to stand or who had brought their own chairs from home.
There was even a DJ providing music until the match began, and the Mayor of El Palmar, Verónica Sánchez, and the Mayor of Murcia City, José Antonio Serrano, were both in attendance.
Now, Carlos Alcaraz is travelling straight to Valencia to play alongside the Spanish team in the Davis Cup.
