Murcia beach voted one of the best in Spain by National Geographic
The prestigious magazine has tipped its hat to a strand in Águilas as one of the top 25 in the country
Spain's extensive coastline, stretching more than 8,000 kilometres along the Mediterranean Sea, the Cantabrian Sea and the Atlantic Ocean, offers a diverse array of beautiful beaches and coves that attract visitors all year round. Recently, National Geographic selected 25 sandy inlets that best represent Spain's beach paradise, and one of them is located in the Region of Murcia.
National Geographic's recognition of Murcia's beaches is not surprising given the Region's natural beauty and numerous picturesque enclaves that charm both locals and tourists alike. In fact, just last January, the magazine featured Moratalla as one of the country’s best "rural treasures" and listed it among the "essential getaways" of 2024. In 2023, Puntas de Calnegre was named one of the best places to swim in September.

Even before this impressive ranking, Playa de la Carolina had earned itself a reputation as one of the country's most pristine and unspoiled coastal areas. Located in the municipality of Águilas, on the border with Almería, this stunning beach has recently been named one of the 25 "best beaches in Spain" by the prominent magazine.
La Carolina forms part of the larger Cuatro Calas area, a protected natural landscape within the Natura 2000 Network. This is due to the area's incredible biodiversity, which makes it a haven for nature lovers and wildlife enthusiasts. Adding to its charm, the beach faces towards Levante and offers unbeatable views of the town and the Castle promontory, and has been granted one of the prestigious Blue Flags to certify its quality.
Facing east, it is protected from waves and currents on the northern, western and southern sides, which means that the abundant fine golden sand is complemented by calm bathing conditions. It is these factors – along with the easy access via off-road tracks from the RM-333 road which leads out of Águilas to the west towards San Juan de los Terreros in Almería – which make te Playa de la Carolina such a popular destination for bathers in summer.
This isn't the first time La Carolina has caught the attention of the media either. In both 2022 and 2023, it was recognised as one of the most beautiful beaches in the country by National Geographic.
And recent photographs taken by Mario Navarro showcase the beach's unique bioluminescent properties, capturing the vibrant, bluish hue the waves take on as they crash towards the shore, reminiscent of a starry night.
