Granada is getting a direct London flight for the first time in years and tickets start at €20
Wizz Air will launch two weekly services between Federico García Lorca Airport and London Luton from Monday October 27
Good news for anyone living in or around Granada who has been waiting for a direct London connection to return. Hungarian low-cost carrier Wizz Air has announced a new twice-weekly route between Federico García Lorca Granada-Jaén Airport and London Luton, launching on Monday October 27. Tickets are already on sale, with fares starting from as little as €20 each way and going up to €80.Flights will operate on Tuesdays and Saturdays. Departing Granada at 10.15am, you land in London at 11.55am. The return journey leaves Luton at 5.50am and arrives in Granada at 9.35am. The flight itself takes between two hours and forty minutes and two hours and forty-five minutes.
It is worth noting that this is not quite the same route Granada had before. The previous London service, which was eventually discontinued after being scaled back to a seasonal operation, flew to Gatwick. This new connection is to Luton, which sits north of the city but is well connected to central London by rail.
Currently, Federico García Lorca Airport operates flights to eight destinations, seven of them domestic and one international, to Amsterdam. London will become its second international route, which feels like a significant step forward for a city that relies heavily on tourism and cultural visitors.
Wizz Air used the announcement to reveal broader expansion plans in Spain. The airline will open new operational bases in both Madrid and Valencia in November, and is adding a string of new routes across the country including Málaga to London, Almería to Bucharest, Asturias to London, and several new connections out of Bilbao, including to Málaga, Santiago de Compostela and Wrocław in Poland.
For British expats living in the Granada area, or anyone with family in the UK, this is the kind of direct link that makes an enormous practical difference. And at €20 for a one-way fare, the bar for booking a spontaneous trip home has just got considerably lower.
