First snowfall of the year in Murcia
The snowfall briefly transformed mountainous areas in the northwest of the Region, but visitors have been urged to exercise caution
The Region of Murcia experienced its first snowfall of 2025 on Friday January 17, as snowflakes graced the high-altitude districts of the northwestern areas.
Although this relatively rare event created breathtaking scenery, the subsequent sunny forecast meant it was short-lived, though officials still urged caution for those planning to visit snowy areas this weekend.
The snowfall was most pronounced in high-altitude locations such as Campo de San Juan, El Calar de la Santa, El Sabinar and the Sierra de Villafuerte, all situated in the municipality of Moratalla.
Additionally, the hamlet of Inazares and the surrounding Sierra de Revolcadores were blanketed in white, offering postcard-worthy views. Snow also made an appearance in parts of the Sierra Espuña regional park, including Collado Bermejo.
However, the snow was limited to high mountain peaks. Accessible locations like Cañada de la Cruz, Los Odres, El Hornico, La Junquera and El Moral had no snow, contrary to some reports.
For those hoping to experience the snowfall, the snow is only present in remote mountain areas, such as the peak of the Obisco, Revolcadores and the Sierra de las Cabras.
Civil Protection in Moratalla and local authorities have issued a strong appeal to residents and visitors, warning against creating false expectations or risking safety. Rising temperatures have already melted much of the accumulated snow, and the remaining snow is inaccessible to most civilian vehicles.
Travelling to mountainous areas without proper knowledge of the terrain or equipment can lead to dangerous situations, including blocked roads and vehicle accidents, which may overwhelm emergency services, they have warned.
There was a dramatic accident at a ski resort in the north of Spain, near the border with France, on Saturday January 18, when several seats broke on a ski lift and fell 15 metres to the ground, leaving 10 people injured.
