Discover El Coto de las Canteras: The Petra of Andalucia
This magical piece of history is located less than two hours from Cádiz
Looking for a unique and exotic travel destination without setting foot on a plane, or even spending too long on the road? Look no further than El Coto de las Canteras, a hidden gem nestled in the province of Sevilla. Dubbed the Petra of Andalucía, this enchanting spot has gained widespread attention on social media, attracting visitors from near and far.
Located in the quaint town of Osuna, El Coto de las Canteras is an ancient quarry that has been in operation for more than 2,000 years. Its rich history dates back to the Turdetan era, with intense exploitation during the 16th century under the IV Count of Ureña. Today, it stands as a testament to the region's storied past.
What’s more, this magical corner of Andalucía is less than two hours by car from Cádiz.
Visitors to El Coto de las Canteras are treated to a mesmerising experience, with towering rock formations and intricate carvings that evoke the mystique of Jordan's famed Petra. The site's natural beauty is complemented by its well-manicured gardens, spanning 4,000 square metres, offering a serene ambiance perfect for a leisurely stroll.
But El Coto de las Canteras is more than just a pretty face. It's also a versatile event space, hosting concerts, weddings, cultural events and open-air receptions. Its designation as the oldest and largest covered natural auditorium in Spain makes it a sought-after venue for unique experiences.
How to get there from Cádiz
Getting to El Coto de las Canteras from Cádiz is straightforward. Simply follow the E-5 towards Ctra. Utrera-Los Palacios/A-362 in Los Palacios and Villafranca for about 50 minutes, then take the A-92 in El Arahal from the Écija to Jerez road/A-394. Continue along A-92 towards Se-8203 in Osuna and take exit 80 from A-92. Finally, take the A-351 towards Buena Vista road, and you'll arrive at your destination.
