Cartagena celebrates Caravaca Jubilee Year with pilgrimage route waymarker
This year is a holy year for Caravaca de la Cruz, with many pilgrim hiking routes ending there
A three-metre-tall waystone marker is being installed in Cartagena’s Santa Lucía dock to mark the beginning of the pilgrimage route to Caravaca de la Cruz this Holy Jubilee Year.
The route marker, in the shape of the True Cross of Caravaca, is being financed by the Royal and Illustrious Brotherhood of the Holy and Vera Cruz of Caravaca and put up by Cartagena City Council.
The celebration of the Holy Jubilee Year of Caravaca is an economic and touristic opportunity for the entire Region of Murcia, but especially for Cartagena, according to the City Mayor Noelia Arroyo, where legend has it that the Apostle James arrived at the Santa Lucía dock to introduce the Gospel to the Iberian peninsula.
“Our objective is to enhance the role of Cartagena as the beginning and destination of pilgrim routes with great natural value and an important cultural heritage, as marked by our Strategic Tourism Plan,” she added.
As well as the initial route marker to come in the port area, a further 200 markings have been installed on the Campo de Cartagena greenway to signpost the so-called ‘Apostle Route’, with the financial support of the Institute of Tourism of the Region of Murcia.
The idea for the waymarker was presented in Cartagena this Wednesday February 21 before the ‘Sendo Senior’, a group of walkers mature in years who are tackling the pilgrimage route in stages.
It is expected that thousands of visitors will come to Murcia in 2024 to walk one of these pilgrim hiking routes.
