The animal was tangled up in fishing nets and plastic bottles when it was freed by Mazarrón whale watchers
Yesterday, Tuesday August 23, a young loggerhead turtle was rescued in Mazarrón and handed over to the Community Wildlife Recovery Centre.
The animal was found in the waters of the Gulf of Mazarrón by the crew of a boat belonging to the Mazarrón company Cetáceos y Navegación during an excursion to watch cetaceans (dolphins, whales, sperm whales, etc.).
According to the skipper of the boat, Toni Méndez, the animal had become entangled in some lines “drifting from the fishing grounds in North Africa” and was attached to “several plastic bottles that, in the area of Morocco and Algeria, are used as buoys.”
After rescuing the sea turtle from the water, the crew of Cetáceos y Navegación freed it and took it ashore to hand it over to the Wildlife Service, which had been alerted beforehand.
